The Green Living Show graced Toronto this weekend and I volunteered at the Toronto Vegetarian Association booth to help save the planet in my own little way. It was heartwarming to work with like minded people.
What left an impression was that being "veggie" or vegan was no longer marginal. Thankfully, GONE are the days of me being the only vegan in the room - and it's about time, too, if I may say so myself.
Most folks seem to be doing it for their health, but what many did not realise when they stopped by our booth was the direct impact livestock production has on climate change. These are not farms where the animals are happily grazed and reared for food production - they are massive factories processing thousands of animals a day, producing more pollution than all of the world's transportation. The sheer scale of these facilities make them extremely dependent on natural resources like petroleum for transportation and fresh water for the animals, when in many parts of the world people cannot access drinking water for themselves.
If we, as humans, have accepted in our collective psyche that buying hybrid and electric vehicles is the right thing to do, then when will we accept a similar truth about our food - that eating meat is killing our planet - or is this truth a little too inconvenient to accept?
